Reliance Defence Secures ₹600 Crore Export Deal with Germany's Rheinmetall

Reliance Defence Limited, a subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure Limited, has secured a massive export contract worth ₹600 crore from Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH — one of Germany’s top defence and ammunition manufacturers.

This deal marks one of the biggest export orders ever awarded to a private Indian defence company in the advanced ammunition sector. The agreement is part of a broader strategic partnership between Reliance Defence and Rheinmetall, aimed at jointly manufacturing high-end explosives and propellants for medium and large caliber ammunition, serving global markets.

In an official statement, Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating,

“This collaboration with Reliance Defence, under the visionary leadership of Anil Ambani and Prime Minister Modi, reflects our deep commitment to India's growing role in global defence manufacturing.”

Anil D. Ambani, Chairman of the Reliance Group, described the alliance as a game-changing moment for India’s private defence sector:

“Our strategic tie-up with Rheinmetall brings world-class expertise to India and marks a landmark step towards self-reliance in defence production.”

Reliance Defence plans to set up a fully integrated facility for manufacturing explosives, small arms, and various ammunition under the ambitious Dhirubhai Ambani Defence City (DADC) project. This greenfield venture is being developed in the Watad industrial area of Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, and is poised to become the largest private defence infrastructure project in Indian history.

Despite past hurdles — including Rheinmetall’s blacklisting by India’s Ministry of Defence in 2012 due to corruption allegations (with the ban extended for three years in 2024) — the collaboration for international exports is moving forward. Notably, state-owned Munitions India Limited had already supplied nearly 500 tonnes of explosives to Rheinmetall during 2023 and early 2024.
