India’s GST Collections Double in Just 5 Years, Surging to ₹22.08 Lakh Crore in FY25

India's indirect tax landscape is witnessing a record-breaking transformation. In a significant fiscal milestone, Gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections reached a historic high of ₹22.08 lakh crore in FY2024-25, nearly double the ₹11.37 lakh crore recorded in FY2020-21.

This sharp rise underscores the maturing of India’s GST system since its implementation in 2017. Over the past five years, the average monthly GST collection rose from ₹95,000 crore in FY22 to ₹1.84 lakh crore in FY25 — a strong indicator of growing compliance, expanding economic activity, and improved administration.

The most substantial monthly collection so far was in April 2025, clocking ₹2.37 lakh crore, followed by ₹2.01 lakh crore in May. The data for June is expected soon and could further cement this upward trend.

According to official sources, GST has not only streamlined the taxation structure by replacing 17 local taxes and 13 cesses, but has also helped create a transparent and efficient indirect tax ecosystem. The taxpayer base has more than doubled — from 65 lakh in 2017 to over 1.51 crore in 2025.

“Since its launch, GST has enhanced revenue collection and widened the tax net. It has significantly improved fiscal stability while reducing complexities in the tax system,” said a government statement on the eve of GST’s eighth anniversary.

With consistent growth over the years — ₹18.08 lakh crore in FY23, ₹20.18 lakh crore in FY24, and now ₹22.08 lakh crore in FY25 — India’s GST regime continues to evolve into a cornerstone of the country’s fiscal framework.

As GST completes eight years on July 1, 2025, it stands as a pivotal reform that has redefined India's tax architecture, fostering ease of doing business and enabling more robust revenue collection.
