A Strategic Ally in the Indo-Pacific – White House Highlights Modi-Trump Bond
In a recent White House press briefing held on Monday (US local time), Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt reaffirmed India's pivotal role as a strategic ally in the Indo-Pacific region. She also acknowledged the strong personal rapport between US President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“India remains a very strategic ally in the Asia Pacific”
Responding to a question by ANI regarding China’s growing influence in the Indo-Pacific, Leavitt stated,
“India remains a very strategic ally in the Asia Pacific and the President has a very good relationship with Prime Minister Modi, and he will continue to have that.”
Her comments come at a time when External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar is visiting the United States to attend the QUAD Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
India's Continued Role in the QUAD Alliance
During his US visit, Minister Jaishankar inaugurated an exhibition at the United Nations titled “The Human Cost of Terrorism”, shedding light on state-sponsored terrorism and its global impact.
The QUAD alliance — comprising Australia, India, Japan, and the United States — remains focused on supporting a free, open, inclusive, and resilient Indo-Pacific. The alliance’s origins date back to the joint response to the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Trump to Attend Upcoming QUAD Summit in New Delhi
Earlier, on June 18, the White House confirmed that President Donald Trump accepted an invitation from Prime Minister Modi to attend the upcoming QUAD Summit in New Delhi.
“For the next meeting of QUAD, PM Modi invited President Trump to India. While accepting the invitation, President Trump said that he is excited to come to India,” said Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, following their interaction at the G7 Summit in Canada.
A Trade Deal on the Horizon
When asked about a potential India-US trade deal, the White House spokesperson confirmed that negotiations are progressing rapidly.
“Yes, the President said that last week, and it remains true. I just spoke to our Secretary of Commerce about it. He was in the Oval Office with the President. They are finalising these agreements, and you’ll hear from the President and his trade team very soon,” said Leavitt.
